Fed Minutes Reveal Divergence: Is an October Rate Hike on Hold?

183486
The Fed's September minutes show officials voted unanimously for a 25bp hike, but were split on whether the move was precautionary or signaled a more hawkish turn. Most expect one more hike before year-end, though the minutes gave no timing. The tension here is a unanimous vote coexisting with genuine disagreement. A clean vote tally is usually read as a clear policy path, but if the disagreement is about the reaction function itself — what a given data print should trigger — then the next decision is less predictable than the tally suggests. Markets habitually extrapolate from vote counts; that may not work this time. The minutes are also three weeks old, and August core PCE has come in below expectations since. On the data, there's a case for an October pause — but "pause" and "finished" are different things. With most officials still expecting a year-end hike, holding in October more likely means pushing the move to December rather than the cycle peaking. If markets trade the former as the latter, expect a repricing later. One more point, set against long yields still making new highs: even an October pause may deliver limited relief to long-duration assets, since the upward pressure at the long end isn't primarily about rate-hike expectations. Do you expect a hike in October? If they hold, how do you see equities, gold and crypto reacting?
