Ohio Crypto Fraud Investigation Unit Helps Victims Recover $130,000 in Funds

On October 10, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yos announced Tuesday that “a new unit within the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) recently recovered $130,000 lost in a cryptocurrency scam in the Columbus area, marking the first victory as a specialized team that helps local law enforcement handle such cases.” The Electronic Fraud Investigations unit was created to combat cyberfinancial crime, particularly the increasingly sophisticated cryptocurrency scams. The scam targeted a 75-year-old woman from Worthington, Ohio, who was tricked into withdrawing $1,000 and depositing it into a Bitcoin ATM after receiving a fraudulent message on her computer. As a result, the victim lost a total of $280,000, but BCI's timely intervention allowed for $130,000 to be recovered. (Bitcoin.com)
