Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan indicates that peak investor anxiety may signal a bottoming out of the crypto market, with Bitcoin prices falling over 50% since October 2025.

This sentiment mirrors previous market cycles, suggesting a potential buying opportunity as cryptocurrencies experience significant drawdowns. Hunter Horsley attributes recent drops to macroeconomic factors.

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan believes that peak investor anxiety signals the crypto market, specifically Bitcoin, is nearing a bottom. This prediction is based on Bitwise’s internal models and historical patterns, with Bitcoin down over 50% from its peak.

Hougan leads analysis on crypto market cycles, describing the current situation as a “full-blown crypto winter” since January 2025. He noted that bear markets typically last 13 months, but this may end sooner.

The crypto bear market affected Bitcoin and other leading cryptocurrencies, with massive outflows from ETFs. This resulted in significant losses, including a global market decrease of $2 trillion.

CEO Hunter Horsley linked Bitcoin’s 30% year-to-date drop to macroeconomic trends and asset sales. New institutions view the downturn as a purchase opportunity.

Bitcoin and altcoins experienced extensive depreciation, yet historical precedent shows markets rebounding strongly post-bottom. Hougan’s analysis includes 2018 and 2022 cases, where past lows led to substantial returns.

Market’s future recovery depends on various factors, including regulatory catalysts like the potential CLARITY Act. This aligns with previous cycles identified by Hougan, showing sharp rises post-crisis.
