Shop While You Ask: Google Integrates AI Shopping Features into Search and Gemini
Google is introducing a new feature that allows consumers to directly purchase products while obtaining AI-powered answers in its search engine and Gemini chatbot. This is part of its overall plan to more directly monetize user engagement with artificial intelligence.
In a letter to the advertising industry on Wednesday, the company stated that its Google Search AI model is testing a new ad format that allows retailers and other advertisers to showcase products. Google said that users can now directly purchase products from Etsy and Wayfair within Gemini. The new "Direct Offers" feature in the AI model will allow brands to offer discounts to potential shoppers.
“We are not only bringing ads into the AI experience of Search, but also redefining the very nature of advertising,” said Vidhya Srinivasan, Google’s Vice President of Ads and Commerce.
As consumers gradually get used to using AI, tech companies are striving to generate revenue through chat functionalities, not just by selling subscription services. Advertising and commercial services will help fund the billions of dollars AI companies plan to invest in infrastructure. Spending by Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms Inc., and Microsoft is expected to reach a record $650 billion by 2026.
