SoftBank Group Japan reports net profit of 248.6 billion yen in Q4 2025, turning losses into gains
SoftBank Group announced on Thursday that it achieved a net profit of 248.6 billion yen (approximately $1.62 billion) for the October–December quarter of 2025.
This represents a significant turnaround from a net loss of 369 billion yen in the same period last year.
This marks the fourth consecutive profitable quarter for SoftBank, mainly due to the continued rise in the valuation of its investment in ChatGPT developer OpenAI. Throughout 2025, SoftBank continued to increase its stake in OpenAI.
Currently, SoftBank’s investment in OpenAI has exceeded $30 billion, holding an approximately 11% stake—an “all-in” bet, as it expects OpenAI to emerge as the ultimate winner in the large language model race.
To raise investment funds, this technology investment group has financed itself by selling assets, issuing bonds, and pledging shares in other holdings such as chip design company Arm to secure loans.
Previously, SoftBank sold Nvidia shares worth $5.8 billion in the last quarter and sold part of its T-Mobile stake for $9.17 billion. This has raised concerns among investors about whether SoftBank can continue to provide financial support to the yet-to-be-profitable OpenAI.
In addition, although OpenAI was once regarded as the absolute leader in the large language model field, it is now facing fierce competition from rivals such as Alphabet. Against this backdrop, the costs of AI model training and operations have continued to rise recently, and the company is currently holding related discussions.
