Significant Outflow of Funds from Canada Due to International Securities Transactions
In December, Canadians invested $13.1 billion in overseas securities, with a strong emphasis on purchasing US stocks. At the same time, foreign investors pulled $5.6 billion out of Canadian securities, marking a reversal after six straight months of inflows that had reached $145.4 billion. These movements resulted in a net capital outflow of $18.6 billion from Canada for the month, pushing the total annual outflow to $17.4 billion. By year-end, Canadian investors' total acquisitions of foreign securities amounted to $133.8 billion.
