Data: Bitcoin fell a cumulative 23% in the first 50 trading days before 2026, marking the worst annual start on record.
ChainCatcher news, according to CoinDesk, bitcoin has accumulated a 23% decline over the first 50 trading days of 2026, marking the worst annual start on record. Bitcoin fell 10% in January and dropped another 15% in February. If the downtrend continues, this will be the first time in bitcoin's history to record two consecutive months of decline, and it may also mark the weakest consecutive monthly performance since 2022.
On-chain data platform Checkonchain pointed out that in typical down years, the average index reading on the 50th day is 0.84, while the current reading is 0.77, highlighting the significant magnitude of this pullback. Notably, bitcoin fell 17% in 2025. Historically, the year following a US presidential election tends to perform better overall than the election year itself and most rising years, making the persistent weakness in this cycle particularly notable.
