Trump’s canceled tariffs: Democrats in Congress push to mandate reimbursements
Senate Democrats Propose Tariff Refund Legislation
On Monday, several Democratic senators introduced a bill that would require the government to reimburse tariffs paid under former President Donald Trump’s increased duties, which were recently overturned by the Supreme Court. Spearheaded by Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Ed Markey of Massachusetts, the proposal comes in response to the Supreme Court’s significant 6-3 ruling last Friday that invalidated most of Trump’s tariffs.
Senator Wyden, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, criticized the previous administration’s tariff policies, stating that Trump’s unlawful tax measures have already caused considerable harm to American households, small businesses, and manufacturers, all of whom have faced repeated rounds of new tariffs.
