Australia's trade surplus unexpectedly narrowed in January as gold and equipment imports surged

(1) Data released on Thursday showed that Australia's goods trade surplus unexpectedly narrowed in January, mainly due to a decline in resource exports, while gold imports surged significantly. (2) According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the goods trade surplus in January fell to 2.63 billion AUD (equivalent to 1.86 billions USD) from 3.37 billion AUD in December, far below the market expectation of a 3.9 billion AUD surplus. (3) Exports dropped 0.9% month-on-month, mainly dragged down by agricultural products, iron ore, and coal exports. (4) Imports increased by 0.8% month-on-month, mainly driven by a 47% surge in gold imports and a 50% increase in imports of data center equipment.
