⑴ Japanese rubber futures rose for the second consecutive trading day on Thursday, mainly boosted by a weaker yen and stronger crude oil prices. However, as prices remain high, buying interest is subdued, limiting the gains. ⑵ The Osaka Exchange (OSE) August rubber contract closed up 1.8 yen, or 0.48%, at 376.8 yen per kilogram. The yen-to-dollar exchange rate fell to around 159, hovering near its lowest level since January, making yen-denominated assets more attractive to overseas buyers. ⑶ Oil prices surged on Thursday as Iran intensified attacks on Middle Eastern oil and transportation facilities, sparking market concerns about prolonged conflict and disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Natural rubber is typically influenced by oil price movements, as it competes for market share with synthetic rubber made from crude oil. ⑷ Elevated natural rubber prices have dampened purchasing interest, with trading volumes for rubber contracts in both Osaka and Singapore declining. The latest quote for the April rubber contract on the Singapore Exchange SICOM platform is 198 cents per kilogram, down 0.4%.
