January 2026 U.S. Housing Construction Update

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have released the latest figures on new residential construction for January 2026. The number of privately-owned housing units approved through building permits reached a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 1,376,000. This represents a 5.4% decrease compared to the revised total of 1,455,000 in December, and a 5.8% drop from the January 2025 figure of 1,460,000.

Single-family home permits in January stood at 873,000, reflecting a slight decline of 0.9% from December’s revised number of 881,000. Permits for buildings containing five or more units were also reported.
