ECB Analysis: Lagarde Expected to Maintain Cautious Stance Without Supporting Rate Increase Expectations
ECB Expected to Maintain Rates Amid Geopolitical Tensions
This week, the European Central Bank’s Governing Council is widely anticipated to keep interest rates unchanged. However, the real challenge for officials lies in how they convey their message. President Christine Lagarde faces the delicate task of recognizing that the conflict involving Iran has increased the risks of rising inflation, while avoiding any suggestion that a rate increase in the near future is now the default expectation for markets.
The main issue isn’t whether stricter monetary policy might be necessary—clearly, circumstances could demand it. If the situation deteriorates significantly, a rate hike could even be considered as early as April, regardless of whether a full economic forecast is available at that time.
