Federal Reserve Maintains Interest Rates Amid Ongoing Uncertainty
The latest announcement from the Federal Reserve closely mirrors the statement released seven weeks prior. As anticipated by most analysts, the federal funds rate remains steady at 3.50% to 3.75%.
A notable addition to the statement is a line in the second paragraph acknowledging that “the implications of developments in the Middle East for the U.S. economy are uncertain.” This simply highlights that the already high level of uncertainty has increased further.
More significantly, Governor Christopher Waller, who previously dissented in January by supporting a 25-basis-point rate reduction, has now joined the majority in voting to keep rates unchanged.
