Survey: Middle East war

Golden Ten Data reported on March 19 that a survey published by Reuters on Thursday showed that short positions in Asian currencies have slightly increased due to the escalating Middle East war, which has disrupted energy markets and triggered concerns about inflation, current account pressures, and policy restrictions in the region. According to a survey of 11 respondents, investors have taken a bearish stance on the Thai baht for the first time since early April 2025, and short positions in the Korean won and New Taiwan dollar have also risen to their highest levels in months. This shift in positions reflects the severe energy crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict. The Chief Asia Macro Strategist at Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation stated: "This conflict is likely to last for several weeks... Brent crude prices will remain high in the short term." He pointed out that under these circumstances, currencies such as the Korean won, rupee, and peso will be "more vulnerable," while the renminbi, Singapore dollar, and ringgit may be more resilient.
