Golden Ten Data reported on March 19 that the German Ministry of Finance is studying a special tax scheme for oil companies. This scheme aims to extract a portion of profits generated from the surge in oil prices as tax revenue. Currently, oil prices continue to rise due to market disruptions caused by the US-led war against Iran. Officials are considering imposing a windfall profits tax to help alleviate the financial pressures on the public, with one proposal being to use the funds to increase commuting subsidies. Any such tax would be independent of the measures implemented this week by the government led by German Finance Minister Merz. These measures are intended to address the weeks-long surge in fuel prices caused by the Middle East conflict. They include setting a daily cap on fuel price increases at gas stations and amending antitrust regulations to require energy companies to explain the reasons for oil price hikes.
