Euro Area Current Account Surplus Rises in January 2026
In January 2026, the euro area posted a current account surplus of €38 billion, a significant increase compared to €13 billion in December.
Over the twelve months leading up to January 2026, the surplus reached €261 billion, representing 1.6% of the region's GDP. This figure is lower than the €377 billion surplus (2.5% of GDP) recorded during the previous year.
On the financial account side, euro area residents invested a net total of €786 billion in portfolio securities outside the euro area, while investors from outside the euro area acquired €914 billion in euro area portfolio securities during the same period.
