BIT: Bitcoin options market shifts to defensive stance as demand for downside protection rises significantly

ChainCatcher news, BIT (formerly Matrixport) released today's chart stating that the spot price of bitcoin has not yet fully reflected this change, but the options market has already responded, with implied volatility rising significantly and demand for downside protection continuing to heat up. Over the past week, put buying accounted for 29% of bitcoin options trading, and even higher for ethereum at 37%, with positions clearly shifting towards defense.

This round of position adjustment reflects traders' deep concerns about geopolitical tensions: inflationary pressures may persist longer as a result, and the impact is not limited to oil prices but is spreading to broader growth-sensitive assets. Therefore, continuously tracking changes in market positions remains crucial, especially in the options market. Compared to spot, options often reflect changes in risk appetite of fast-money accounts and tactical funds earlier. Although overall trading volume remains relatively low, market participants have not relaxed their vigilance, but are actively managing tail risks. However, it is worth noting that bitcoin's performance is still outperforming other risk assets.

According to reports, since the middle of last week, Saudi Arabia has sold approximately 100 million barrels of crude oil to China, India, Japan, and South Korea, with delivery periods covering October and November. At the same time, Saudi Aramco has made a rare commitment in these transactions to handle logistics and transportation, delivering the crude oil directly to Asian customers. Previously, due to soaring oil prices, Asian refineries had been considering reducing operating rates. This large-scale supply has to some extent mitigated the supply risks faced by Asia.
