Key Market Highlights for Thursday, March 26

Financial markets experienced notable volatility as initial optimism over possible ceasefire negotiations briefly calmed geopolitical concerns. This relief was short-lived, however, as Iran expressed hesitancy to engage in dialogue with the United States, underscoring the delicate nature of diplomatic efforts and sustaining market uncertainty.

The US Dollar Index (DXY) advanced to just under 100, hovering around 99.50. The US Dollar maintained its strength, buoyed by favorable interest rate differentials and ongoing demand for safe-haven assets as risk sentiment soured.

The EUR/USD currency pair declined toward 1.1570, pressured by the robust US Dollar, which limited the Euro’s potential gains. Persistent worries about Eurozone economic growth, following disappointing PMI data earlier in the week, continued to weigh on the Euro.

The GBP/USD pair slipped closer to 1.3370, as the British Pound struggled amid ongoing concerns regarding the United Kingdom’s economic outlook and inflation trends.

USD/JPY surged to approximately 159.30, supported by higher US Treasury yields and the ongoing policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan.

The AUD/USD pair retreated to the 0.6960 level, with the Australian Dollar under pressure from a stronger US Dollar and persistent global growth concerns.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices edged up to around $90.30 per barrel, pulling back from recent peaks as hopes for a ceasefire eased immediate supply anxieties. Nonetheless, oil prices remained elevated due to ongoing geopolitical risks.

Gold rallied toward the $4,550 mark, benefiting from declining yields and reduced inflationary pressures from oil, while still drawing support from persistent geopolitical instability.

Slowing AI models may not necessarily be bearish: three structural tailwinds for traditional data centers outweigh rising interest rates

HSBC believes that the traditional growth logic of data centers is shifting from frontier model iteration to AI commercialization and diffusion. With the rise in inference demand and increased capital expenditure from cloud service providers, combined with tightening power and regulatory constraints, the supply-demand imbalance is expected to persist until 2028. Even with rising interest rates, the compound annual growth rate of AFFO per share is still expected to reach 11%–12% from 2025 to 2028, demonstrating strong earning resilience.

This time, will U.S. Treasury bonds crash U.S. stocks?

Bloomberg strategist Simon White warns that the recent rise in US Treasury yields is shifting from a "benign" increase driven by interest rate expectations to a disorderly surge fueled by expanding term premium. Market analysts note that higher long-term interest rates will simultaneously push up US stock valuation discount rates and corporate financing costs, intensifying liquidation pressure on highly leveraged assets. If interest rates above 5% become the new norm, US stock valuations will face ongoing compression pressure.
