Fed Outlook April 2026: Understanding Oil Prices, Inflation, and the FOMC
April Economic Update: Oil Shock and Fed Policy
As April gets underway, global markets are grappling with significant challenges. Ongoing conflict is disrupting a major global oil transit route, pushing Brent crude prices above US$100 per barrel. Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve, which spent much of 2025 steering the economy toward a gentle slowdown, now faces a new inflationary threat—this time fueled primarily by surging energy costs rather than domestic factors like wages or services.
The Fed is closely monitoring the impact of this oil-driven shock. Currently, the federal funds rate remains between 3.50% and 3.75%. With the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for April 28 and 29, investors are less concerned about whether a rate cut will happen, and more focused on whether the Fed is even able to lower rates in the face of persistent energy-driven inflation.
