Severe weather hits Australian mining sector, BHP and Rio Tinto may fail to meet production targets

Golden Ten Data reported on April 2 that Barrenjoey analysts indicated that due to severe weather, Australian mining companies may collectively report production shortfalls for this fiscal quarter. The Australian bank expects that, because of strong cyclones at the end of the quarter and other weather-related disruptions, the performances of BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, South32, and Mineral Resources will fall short of expectations. In addition, the institution expects Coronado, Evolution, Sandfire, and IGO to also record production gaps. However, Barrenjoey pointed out that thanks to stronger-than-expected prices, rare earth miner Lynas may see revenues exceed expectations. At the same time, because Vault Minerals settled most of its hedging positions by the end of 2025, its cash flow performance is also likely to surpass expectations.
