US media: Iranian Speaker threatens to cut off shipping in the Mandeb Strait
BlockBeats News, April 5 — According to NBC News on April 3, the Speaker of Iran's Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, appeared to threaten to block commercial shipping traffic through the strategic Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.
According to the report, Ghalibaf posted on social platform X: “What share of the world’s oil, liquefied natural gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer shipments pass through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait?” He further wrote: “Which countries and companies have the most cargo transported through this strait?”
In recent years, ships passing through this area have repeatedly been attacked by Yemen's Houthi militants, who are aligned with the Iranian regime. The threat to the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait comes as Iran has already largely cut off shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which has plunged the global economy into chaos.
