The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is set to introduce a new digital platform designed to handle potentially $175 billion in tariff reimbursements for businesses. These refunds follow a court decision that found certain tariffs, implemented in 2025 under emergency economic authority, were not legally valid.
Starting April 20, importers can use the portal to submit requests for duty repayments related to these tariffs. The federal ruling has prompted a large-scale effort to return collected duties.
Why Are Tariff Refunds Being Issued?
The tariffs in question were enacted through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. However, a federal court later determined that the process did not comply with legal requirements, leading to the current refund initiative.
