The Commodities Feed: Markets fluctuate as tensions rise again in the Persian Gulf
Middle East Tensions Cause Volatility in Oil Markets
Oil prices are experiencing significant fluctuations due to ongoing events in the Middle East. What initially seemed like a calming of tensions has quickly shifted back to renewed uncertainty. On Friday, Iran stated it would permit commercial ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a sharp decline in oil and gas prices—at one stage, ICE Brent dropped by as much as 13%.
This announcement also resulted in an increase in shipping activity, with Bloomberg reporting that 11 tankers traversed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, marking the highest number since the conflict began. Despite these signs of easing, recent weekend events indicate that any sense of relief may be short-lived.
