Citibank is fully expanding its foreign exchange business, targeting hedge fund and private equity clients.

Flavio Figueiredo, Citigroup's Global Head of FX Trading, said in a media interview in Singapore that given the bank's established position in corporate and real money flow areas, these two segments are seen as key opportunities. He stated that the bank's strategy is to consolidate areas where it already holds strong influence and “enter segments with lower penetration.” This initiative is aimed at hedge funds and private equity and venture capital firms that provide financing for acquisitions, growth, and restructuring. Figueiredo revealed that to support this initiative, the bank plans to expand its global FX sales and trading team by 4%-5% this year. In addition to hiring talent, Citigroup is also increasing investment in its electronic distribution platform, which allows liquidity providers such as banks and market makers to quote prices to clients and execute trades electronically.
