An Indian-American man was arrested at Delhi airport in India for carrying 115 gold bars on his person.
Golden Ten Data, May 17 — According to New Delhi Television, an Indian-American citizen arriving from the United States was arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi for concealing 115 gold bars, with a total value of up to 55 million rupees (573,000 US dollars) and a total weight exceeding 3.5 kilograms, inside his trousers. The man arrived in Delhi from San Francisco on Friday. Previously, Indian customs officials received intelligence indicating that an international smuggling syndicate had recently been attempting to smuggle large quantities of gold into India. Based on this specific intelligence, customs authorities carried out special surveillance measures at the international arrivals hall of IGI Airport. Indian customs officials stated that since India raised its gold import tariffs, the number of gold smuggling cases has recently shown a sharp upward trend.
