The wave of layoffs hits the tech industry again! Meta reportedly plans to lay off around 8,000 employees this week.
Golden Ten Data, May 19|According to CNBC, Meta Platforms plans to cut about 8,000 employees this week, representing approximately 10% of its total workforce. At the same time, the company has also canceled 6,000 planned vacant positions. The layoffs are expected to officially commence on Wednesday. Meta reportedly told employees that these layoffs "are part of our ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency while also allowing us to offset cost pressures from investments elsewhere."
The layoffs coincide with Meta’s significant increase in artificial intelligence investments. Last month, the company raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance by as much as $10 billion, with the total reaching up to $145 billion. According to current and former Meta employees, further layoffs are anticipated later this year, including possible rounds in August and again sometime after 2026.
According to the layoff tracking website Layoffs.fyi, so far in 2026, 137 tech companies have collectively laid off nearly 110,000 people. By comparison, the total number of tech layoffs for the entire year of 2025 was about 125,000.
