(1) Data from the Malaysian Department of Statistics shows that the Producer Price Index (PPI) in April 2026 increased by 5.4% year-on-year, the highest growth since August 2022, significantly expanding from 1.1% in March. The main driver was the rise in prices of crude oil and petroleum-related products. (2) By sector, mining surged 53.4% year-on-year (compared to 26.5% in March), with the crude oil extraction index soaring 74.5%; manufacturing grew by 1.1% (March: -0.8%), benefiting from computers, electronics, and optical products (+3.8%), and coke and refined petroleum products (+3.0%); agriculture, forestry, and fisheries increased by 2.7%, rebounding from a 5.6% decline in the previous month; electricity and gas supply grew by 10.8% and 10.6% respectively. (3) Month-on-month, April’s PPI rose by 3.2%; the raw materials index for further processing jumped by 10.0% compared to the previous month. International comparisons indicate that the PPI in the US, Japan, and Thailand all showed an upward trend in April, mainly due to rising global energy and commodity prices, supply chain disruptions, and increased production costs.
