French electricity prices soar as scorching heat may lead to nuclear plant output cuts
Golden Ten Data reported on May 26 that French electricity prices have soared due to concerns that scorching summer temperatures will lead to reduced nuclear power generation and a decline in hydropower output. According to data from the European Energy Exchange (EEX), forward one-month electricity futures rose by 11.7% to reach their highest level since late March. Northwestern Europe is experiencing its first heatwave of the summer, with daytime temperatures in Paris expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. In previous hot summers, some French nuclear reactors were forced to shut down because river water used to cool the reactors became too warm. Last year, some coastal nuclear reactors in the country were also affected, as marine heatwaves resulted in large numbers of jellyfish clogging filtration equipment. France’s nuclear power plants are the backbone of the European electricity market, meaning that any change in power output not only affects domestic electricity prices but also has an impact on a wider region.
