Industry insider: Apple considering adopting LG Display’s new panel technology

Glonghui, June 2nd — According to The Elec, LG Display is developing a thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane technology called High Mobility Oxide (HMO), which will be used in the sixth generation of medium and small-size OLEDs. As Apple is considering HMO as a candidate material for next-generation low-power backplanes to replace Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) TFT, LG Display has begun verifying the technology. Industry insiders in South Korea speculate that LG Display’s HMO technology may mainly be applied in OLED displays used for devices such as Apple Watch. In addition, Apple does not prefer exclusive supply and is more inclined to a dual- or triple-sourcing supply strategy.
