Norsk Hydro hit by second aluminum supply crisis

Norsk Hydro (OTCMKTS: NHYDY) has declared a second force majeure on aluminum sales after its Qatalum joint venture in Qatar terminated a long-standing marketing agreement, raising fresh concerns about the Norwegian producer’s ability to meet customer commitments.

var rnd = window.rnd || Math.floor(Math.random() * 10e6); var pid472436 = window.pid472436 || rnd; var plc472436 = window.plc472436 || 0; var abkw = window.abkw || ''; var absrc = 'https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/;ID=181210;size=0x0;setID=472436;type=js;sw=' + screen.width + ';sh=' + screen.height + ';spr=' + window.devicePixelRatio + ';kw=' + abkw + ';pid=' + pid472436+ ';place=' + (plc472436++) + ';rnd=' + rnd + ';click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER'; document.write('

The notice, reviewed by Reuters on Friday, follows an earlier declaration in March when war-related disruptions in the Middle East interrupted gas supplies to Qatalum, forcing the smelter to begin shutting down operations. While the plant later secured enough gas to restore production to about 60% of capacity, Hydro said the original force majeure remains in effect.

Qatalum has annual production capacity of 648,000 tonnes and is owned equally by Hydro and Qatar Aluminum Manufacturing Co. (Qamco).

“Qatalum has notified Hydro that it terminated the agreement under which Hydro markets and sells Qatalum metal,” the notice said, according to Reuters. “Despite Hydro’s efforts to make Qatalum withdraw its notice of termination, Qatalum has refused to do so and Qatalum has informed Hydro that it will not deliver metal under the relevant agreements.”

Contract rift

The dispute creates a new source of supply uncertainty beyond the region’s ongoing conflict. Hydro said it disputes Qatalum’s right to terminate the agreement and warned that it could be unable to fulfil contractual deliveries even if operating conditions improve. The development also raises questions about the future commercial relationship between the partners at one of the Middle East’s largest aluminum smelters.

Column: Iran war exposes fragility of Western aluminum market

Norsk Hydro said it could not estimate how long the disruption would last or its full impact on customers but would work to minimize supply interruptions.

The announcement came a day after US President Donald Trump said a peace agreement with Iran could be signed as soon as this weekend to end the three-month-old regional conflict, although Tehran said no final decision had been made.

Blackstone President Jon Gray refuted the notion of an “AI trillion-dollar investment bubble” in his latest closed-door speech. He noted that large models and AI company revenues are exhibiting explosive growth by hundreds of times, and macro productivity has already surged. He likened the current AI wave to "the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in 1870," emphasizing that demand far exceeds supply. He stated that the true investment focus lies in addressing real-world “hard shortages,” specifically by heavily investing in chips, data centers, and power infrastructure, all of which face extremely high capital and capacity barriers.

The explosive growth of Meta's AI agent Muse shows that artificial intelligence is evolving from "chatting" to "getting things done": continuously running, data-orchestrating agents will extend computing power demand from GPUs to CPUs, boosting Arm, Intel, and AMD. Goldman Sachs commented that the strong rebound in the Nasdaq resembles a "quiet rally" driven by tech giants and options; institutions recognize the fundamentals of AI, but are concerned about valuations rising too quickly and divergences between interest rates and the credit market, waiting for Micron's earnings to verify whether the AI trade can be sustained.
