Pharmaceuticals shield exports against tariffs, Italy achieves export growth against the trend
- Italian Foreign Minister Tajani stated on Tuesday that the pharmaceutical industry is the core driving force behind the country's exports. Despite facing Trump’s tariff rhetoric and two geopolitical conflicts, export performance has remained “remarkable and beyond expectations.”
- At the conference of the Rome Pharmaceutical Industrial Association, Tajani pointed out that Italy’s economy grew by 3.3% last year, and the preliminary data for early 2026 are also encouraging, with the pharmaceutical sector’s outstanding contribution playing a significant role.
- He emphasized that exports account for nearly 40% of Italy’s economic output and that the government must support this sector, which has achieved “world-class results,” including by reducing bureaucratic burdens and addressing payment cycle issues.
- According to data from Italy’s National Institute of Statistics, the country’s pharmaceutical exports to the United States soared by 54.1% last year. Against the backdrop of Trump’s tariff rhetoric, Italy was the only major EU country to achieve export growth to the US.
