- The upcoming dense release of UK economic data next week will be the core driving factor for the pound’s trend; the strength or weakness of the readings may directly determine whether the Bank of England’s rate hike expectations for this year will be completely removed.
- At present, the market is still pricing in the possibility of a 25 basis point rate hike before the end of the year, with the probability of action in September at about a quarter. However, since September is not a quarterly forecast meeting, the policy signaling window is not ideal, and this probability seems overly optimistic.
- Institutional analysis points out that most officials within the Bank of England still prefer to remain patient; staying on hold remains the base case, and the soon-to-be-released services CPI and wage data are likely to further reinforce this stance.
- The current inflation rate in the services sector is 3.6%, and the market expects it to fall to 3.4%. If expectations are met, this will be the second lowest level since Q1 2022, strongly confirming the continued progress of the disinflation trend.
- In terms of the labor market, the central bank is focusing on the growth rate of private sector wages, which at the current level of 2.9% is already below the 3.25% reference line it considers consistent with inflation sustainably returning to a 2% target. If the readings are again soft, the rationale for a short-term rate hike will become even weaker.
- Based on the current pricing structure, if the overall data is weak, the UK interest rate market will face significant dovish repricing space. This may suppress the pound's short-term upside flexibility and make it highly likely to remain in the recent range-bound pattern.
