S&P Global Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for August rose to 52.8 from July’s 51.9, surpassing the market expectation of 51.8 and marking the fastest expansion in manufacturing activity in four years. Growth was concentrated in Germany, with its output increasing by the most since January 2022, reflecting that recent government spending initiatives have had a certain positive effect on the economy.
Growth in new orders drove a slight increase in manufacturing employment, ending a three-year streak of monthly layoffs. Purchasing activity also saw a modest rise. Input cost growth slowed to its weakest pace since the Middle East conflict began, narrowing the increase in output prices. Manufacturing business confidence improved to a six-month high.
