The Indonesian parliament will vote on a candidate for central bank governor, and Destry is expected to become the first female central bank governor.
智通财经2026/08/26 02:41- The Indonesian parliament held a "fit and proper" hearing on Wednesday for Destry, the sole candidate for central bank governor. If appointed, she will become the first female governor of Bank Indonesia. Destry, 62 years old, currently serves as the acting governor of the central bank, and she is widely expected to receive parliamentary confirmation.
- Earlier reports indicated that Destry was the frontrunner. News of her nomination on August 10 boosted the Indonesian rupiah, after former governor Perry Warjiyo's sudden resignation before the end of his second term sparked concerns about policy uncertainty, leading to capital outflows and a sharp decline in the rupiah.
- The hearing was reviewed by the parliamentary finance committee and will require a full parliamentary vote before the president can officially appoint her. It remains unclear whether the new governor will serve a full five-year term or merely complete the remainder of Warjiyo's term, which was originally set to end in 2028. Since 2008, the Indonesian parliament has never rejected a sitting president's nominee for central bank governor.

Deutsche Bank: After the three major central banks hiked rates simultaneously, the market may once again underestimate the terminal interest rate
Deutsche Bank points out that as central banks in the US, Europe, and Japan are tightening policy simultaneously, the market may still be underpricing the eventual terminal rates. With oil prices remaining high, inflation may spill over into core inflation and wages. Moreover, financial conditions have not tightened in tandem, which could weaken the effect of rate hikes. Citing the experience of 2022, Deutsche Bank notes that the market then expected a total of around 200 basis points of Fed rate hikes in the first year, but the final figure exceeded 400 basis points, illustrating that the market often underestimates the terminal rate.
