One Nvidia Risk: Transition to Next-Gen AI Architecture -- WSJ

Nvidia is navigating a critical hardware transition as it scales down production of its Blackwell platform to ramp up its next-generation Rubin architecture. Blackwell anchored the current AI boom, supporting generative AI and data centers. The more-powerful Rubin system is designed to support agentic AI models.

Some are increasingly focused on the timing. "Handoff quarters can be, historically, where expectations get challenged," said Jake Behan, head of capital markets at Direxion. "You have the timing of this one platform winding down while the other one is ramping up, but the transition is not going to be perfectly synchronized, potentially."

Behan points to two potential issues:

-- Hardware supply disruptions could throw off results. "Nvidia certainly has a lot of agreements and hedging in place to secure their supply. But does that supply come unevenly? And does that create a cadence gap in the handoff story?" he asks.

-- Traders also could "confuse a product cycle transition for demand slowdown." In other words, "the risk isn't that they miss the quarter... The risk is that they disrupt the market's assumptions about what comes next."
