Spot Gold Technical Analysis: Wedge Pattern Suggests Impending Breakout, 4466 Becomes Key Resistance Level

  1. From a technical perspective, spot gold may retest the resistance level at $4,466 per ounce. If this level is effectively broken, the gold price could further rise to $4,510.
  2. The rebound from the $4,396 low is forming a small wedge pattern. Typically, this pattern is considered a bearish continuation structure, indicating that after a period of consolidation, the gold price may resume its downward trend. However, under certain conditions, a wedge formation can also transform into a bottom reversal pattern. A breakout above $4,466 would confirm the validity of the bottom reversal, while a drop below $4,428 could suggest the downtrend will continue.
  3. On the daily chart, the retracement from the $4,696 high has been fairly deep and cannot be simply classified as a re-test of the descending trendline. The current pattern is more likely to be one of two scenarios: either a deeper retracement into the $4,011 to $3,945 range (the region of the b-wave low), or a continuation of the larger-scale downtrend since the $5,596 high.
  4. However, gold has shown signs of stabilizing near the $4,416 support level. In the short term, it is expected to consolidate above this level for several days, building momentum before choosing the next major direction. If, after consolidating, it breaks upwards through $4,466, there could be room for a further rise in the short term; if it falls below $4,416, downward pressure will return to dominance. The $4,428 level, which acts as wedge pattern support, is also the key position for verifying whether the short-term bulls have sustained strength.

Goldman Sachs trader's quick comment on Waller's statement: If "Q4 inflation trend remains unchanged," then it's more than just one rate hike.

Goldman Sachs issued a special warning, highlighting a clear internal contradiction between the hawkish remarks made by Waller and the SEP projection that inflation will not fall back to 2% until 2029. If there is no substantial change in the inflation trend in the fourth quarter, the Federal Reserve may adopt a more aggressive front-loading rate hike path than currently indicated in the dot plot, and the baseline expectation of "one more hike" may face upward revision pressure.
