Market Chatter: Swiss Lawmakers Propose Lower UBS Capital Requirement

MT newswireMT newswire2026/09/01 07:48
03:48 AM EDT, 09/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- UBS (UBS) should back its foreign subsidiaries with 50% common equity Tier 1 capital, rather than the 100% sought by the Swiss government, Reuters reported Monday, citing a Swiss parliamentary committee. The report said the committee proposed allowing UBS to use additional tier 1 capital for the remaining 50%. UBS would also face restrictions on dividends, share buybacks and bonuses if its CET1 ratio falls below about 11%, it added. The proposal must still be approved by Switzerland's upper house and then considered by the lower house, Reuters said, adding that a final decision could come by year-end or in 2027. UBS did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
