Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Mixed Late Afternoon

03:41 PM EDT, 09/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were mixed late Tuesday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) increasing 0.3% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) falling 1.8%. Redbook US same-store sales rose by 9.6% from a year earlier in the week ended Aug. 29 after a 9.1% year-over-year increase in the previous week. Redbook noted that most companies reported strong back-to-school demand for children's and juniors' apparel and footwear. In corporate news, August registrations for new Tesla (TSLA) vehicles, a proxy for sales, rose by 279% in France and 104% in Denmark from a year ago, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing data from French car industry body PFA and Danish vehicle data platform bilstatistik.dk. Meanwhile, registrations in Norway and Spain fell by 79%, and they fell in Sweden, Portugal and Italy by 41%, 37% and 36%, respectively, the report said, citing data from industry groups and Italy's Transport Ministry. Tesla shares were down 3.3%. Boxabl (BXBL) shares rose 4% after the company said LC Vegas Acquisitions agreed to buy up to 1,500 of its factory-built homes over a three-year period. Ford (F) is recalling 148,663 US vehicles over potential loss of drive power and failures affecting headlights or the windshield washer system, Reuters reported, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford shares fell 1.5%. Stellantis (STLA) will suspend production at its Mirafiori factory in Turin, Italy, between Sept. 2 and Sept. 4, several media outlets reported Tuesday, citing statements from the company and the FIOM trade union. Its shares declined 2.6%.
