Many newcomers ask about the impact of Federal Reserve interest rate hikes on the crypto market.

Simply put, rate hikes essentially tighten global US dollar liquidity, which is generally negative for the crypto market. Mainstream coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum come under pressure, and altcoins often face even larger declines. Since Bitcoin itself is a non-interest-bearing risk asset, when the Federal Reserve raises rates, US Treasury yields go up, making risk-free financial products more attractive. As a result, funds flow out of the crypto market. At the same time, the cost of borrowing rises, causing leveraged capital in crypto to contract, making it easier for cascading liquidations to occur during market downturns and amplifying price drops. A strengthening US dollar also increases the cost of buying crypto globally, further suppressing coin prices. However, it’s important to remember that the market trades on expectations, not the actual results: if the rate hike news was already priced in, a rebound may occur once the news becomes official. But if the Federal Reserve delivers a more hawkish stance than expected, the market could drop quickly. Different coins bear varying levels of pressure — Bitcoin and ETH have stronger liquidity, so their declines are more controlled, while altcoins and meme coins rely heavily on speculative capital and fall harder when liquidity tightens. Of course, interest rates are only one macro factor. ETF developments, regulatory policies, and unexpected black swan events can all outweigh the impact of rates. You should never judge the market solely on Federal Reserve rates — always manage your positions carefully and be aware of the huge risks associated with high leverage.
