Rocket Lab expects that its proposed acquisition of Iridium Communications will double the company's size "overnight."

According to an English media outlet, Rocket Lab (RKLB.US) anticipates that its proposed acquisition of Iridium Communications (IRDM.US) will double the size of the company "overnight." As the space company prepares to use this deal as a springboard to further expand its orbital applications and constellation business, its broader expansion plans are also unfolding.

The acquisition of Iridium Communications completes Rocket Lab's space portfolio

Rocket Lab is well-known for its launch business and has carried out nearly 100 launch missions to date, while also developing a larger Neutron rocket. However, the company has also established a space systems business covering satellite components, subsystems, and complete spacecraft.

In June, Rocket Lab announced the acquisition of satellite communications service provider Iridium Communications through a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $8 billion. This marks one of the largest consolidation moves in the commercial space sector in recent years. According to the agreement, shareholders of Iridium Communications will receive $27 per share in cash plus Rocket Lab shares, for a total consideration of about $54 per share. The deal is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

This acquisition will deeply integrate Rocket Lab's launch vehicle and satellite manufacturing business with Iridium Communications' global L-band satellite network, licensed spectrum resources, and more than 2.5 million subscribers (including government, defense, aviation, maritime, and commercial markets), creating a synergistic ecosystem of space manufacturing and communications services.

Rocket Lab stated that this move aims to build a "vertically integrated, comprehensive space company capable of independently completing the design, manufacture, launch, and operation of constellation systems and providing essential communications services to millions of users worldwide." Through this deal, Rocket Lab will immediately enter the stable revenue stream of satellite communications services, while utilizing its own rockets to deploy and replenish future constellation systems, thereby reducing reliance on third-party launch service providers. This strategic path is highly aligned with that of SpaceX (SPCX.US), which has similarly relied on its own rockets to make Starlink the world's largest satellite constellation.

Rocket Lab's Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Adam Spice stated during World Satellite Business Week that Iridium Communications will fill the missing link in the company's transformation from a launch service provider to a fully integrated space operator. Adam Spice noted that what Rocket Lab lacks is the application layer—that is, operating an on-orbit constellation and managing the supporting ground infrastructure, which Iridium Communications will provide. This will allow Rocket Lab to extend its business scope from launches and spacecraft manufacturing to constellation operation and services. He said: "This will be an incredibly transformational change and truly completes the entire loop for us." He further pointed out that Rocket Lab aims to become a "next-generation end-to-end space company."

Rocket Lab plans for post-merger growth

Adam Spice noted that Rocket Lab's annual growth rate has approached 100% in recent years, while the more mature Iridium Communications has grown at a single-digit rate. This means acquiring Iridium Communications will initially dilute Rocket Lab's overall growth rate.

Adam Spice said: "When you double the size of your company overnight—as is the case with this merger—you will naturally see some dilution in the growth rate." However, Rocket Lab believes Iridium Communications has "interesting growth directions" that are expected to drive the next phase of expansion.

Adam Spice added that greater access to capital and a more "aggressive, growth-oriented" strategy may help unlock these opportunities. He said, "We have a lot of aggressive plans," aiming to grow the combined company’s growth rate to the level investors expect over time.

Rocket Lab targets more space deals

Adam Spice also considers Rocket Lab's valuation an advantage for further expansion, noting that "capital, like products and management teams, is also a weapon." He stated that Rocket Lab's "very healthy valuation" has enabled the company to push forward with the acquisition of a company nearly its own size. In turn, continued execution of the company's strategy should allow Rocket Lab to maintain access to financing, for both internal investment and future transactions.

Adam Spice pointed out: "As we continue to execute our strategy, the capital markets will continue to provide us with funding, and we will continue to drive growth organically and inorganically." He emphasized that the acquisition of Iridium Communications is "the first of many steps toward a broader space market," particularly in the applications and constellation fields.
