Trump: Spoke with Walsh before the rate hike and supports Walsh's decision

Trump revealed, “I spoke with Kevin. I said, ‘You’d better just vote with the committee; the outcome won’t be any different anyway.’” He told Walsh, “Do as you wish,” and added, “I trust Walsh, but he is facing a very tough committee.” However, Trump has also publicly called for interest rates to be lowered to 1%.

US President Trump stated that before the Federal Reserve made its rate hike decision, he had spoken with Federal Reserve Chair Walsh and told him, "Do whatever you want."

On September 16 local time, according to the Wall Street Journal, when asked on Wednesday whether he trusted Walsh, Trump told reporters, "I trust Kevin. But he faces a very tough committee," "I spoke with Kevin. I said, 'You'd better just vote with the committee; the outcome won’t be any different anyway.'" Trump added, "I said, 'Do whatever you want.'"

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve unanimously voted to raise the federal funds rate target range by 25 basis points to between 3.75% and 4%. This is the first rate hike in three years and partially reverses last year's rate cuts, indirectly contrasting the White House's position of "not worrying about inflation." Reportedly, since Walsh became Federal Reserve Chair, Trump has spoken with him several times.

Walsh: Independence Goes Both Ways

Facing public questioning about his relationship with the President, Walsh responded directly at the press conference on Wednesday.

Part of the Federal Reserve’s independence is that we stay within our boundaries…Independence goes both ways. We let those responsible for trade and fiscal policy stay within their boundaries so that we can stand here and speak according to our own judgement.

That evening, Trump also said that he hoped Walsh would remain independent.

However, at the same time, Trump still insisted that rates should go down. He posted on Truth Social:

US interest rates should be 1%.

Comparison with the Powell Era

Trump's frequent communications with Walsh stand in stark contrast to his attitude toward former Chair Powell. He had repeatedly and publicly criticized Powell, even considering firing him.

Since Walsh took office as Chairman, Trump has spoken with him several times.

At Walsh's inauguration, Trump explicitly stated:

I want Kevin to be completely independent. Don’t look at me, don’t look at anyone else. Do things your own way and do a good job.

But less than six months after Walsh took office, Trump called proactively on the eve of the rate hike and publicly disclosed the call to reporters.

Historical Precedents of White House and Federal Reserve Communication

There is precedent for Presidents and Federal Reserve Chairs having occasional contact, but in recent decades, such interactions have usually been more formal and deliberately low-key to avoid the perception of presidential interference in rate decisions.

According to reports, Trump is in the habit of bypassing standard communication channels, staying in touch via his personal phone with various parties, including foreign leaders, business executives, and members of Congress.

In the 1960s, the White House and the Federal Reserve had relatively frequent contact. Afterwards, Nixon pressured Chairman Arthur Burns, which led to the inflation of the 1970s and prompted a significant reduction in direct contact thereafter. By the 1980s, communication with the Federal Reserve Chair was conducted mainly through the Treasury Secretary.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal last December, Trump himself said he hoped the Federal Reserve Chair would consult him when setting rates. "I am a smart voice that should be listened to," he said.
