Google Hit With UK Proposals to Add A I Assistants to Android, Chrome Choice Screens

06:15 AM EDT, 09/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG) (GOOGL) Google is facing fresh proposals from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority to give Android and Chrome users greater choice and control over the search services they use, including AI assistants, the regulator said Wednesday. The updated proposals reflect changes in how people search for information online, including the rising adoption of AI services such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity, CMA said. Under the proposals, Google would be required to offer Android and Chrome users a choice of search services when they first use an Android phone or Chrome, followed by a prompt every year to select their default provider, the CMA added. "We've listened carefully to feedback and are responding quickly to the rise of AI assistants, which people are increasingly using as their search service, but aren't included on Google's choice screens," said Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA. CMA has invited views on its proposals by Oct. 9 before making a final decision on the matter by the end of the year. Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
