Meta's VR Hardware Expansion Benefits Unity (U.US)! The "shovel seller" logic heats up, profitability inflection point awaits earnings report validation
Meta's latest VR and AI technologies are considered important factors driving the development of Unity.
According to Zhitong Finance APP, boosted by Meta’s launch of a new generation of VR and AI hardware at Meta Connect 2026, game engine company Unity Software (U.US) saw its pre-market stock price soar more than 3%, rising above $45.
Zuckerberg's “Personal Superintelligence” Hardware Offensive
The two-day Meta Connect 2026 took place from September 23 to 24. On the first day, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a range of VR, AI, and wearable devices, including the new Meta VR Glasses and several new Ray-Ban smart glasses. He also systematically outlined the company’s “personal superintelligence” strategy. The second day focused on the developer ecosystem, including SDK updates and technical sessions.
The direct link between the hardware launch and Unity lies in the fact that every immersive device Meta sells demands more content, and the tools to create this content are largely controlled by Unity.
Unity’s Triple Revenue Logic
The foundation of engine licensing. Unity has had a longstanding partnership with Meta. In April this year, the two parties renewed a multi-year platform support and enterprise collaboration agreement, with Unity continuing to support Meta’s VR platform while developers use Unity tools to create games and business applications for Meta devices. At that time, Unity disclosed that most of the best-selling VR games on the Meta platform run on Unity’s engine. This means that each expansion of Meta hardware installations directly increases the developer base and subscription revenue for Unity’s Create business.
Deep integration of AI tools. Technical integration between the two companies continues to strengthen. Meta introduced the XR Unity MCP Extension, allowing developers to call AI agents and create or modify Meta VR scenes directly within the Unity Editor. This tool embeds AI content generation into Unity’s workflow, further lowering the threshold for VR content creation—the easier the creation, the more developers come on board, resulting in greater “tax revenue” for the engine.
Ecological flywheel. The core logic of market transactions is a positive cycle: more Meta devices → larger user pool → more developers entering → more immersive applications → higher engine utilization. On this chain, Unity plays the typical “shovel seller” role. Its earnings elasticity depends on the speed of Meta’s hardware ecosystem expansion, rather than the success of any single device.
Profit Turning Point at the Core of Bullish Views
According to MarketWatch’s summary of 32 institutions, Unity currently has an average rating of “Buy” and an average price target of $50.32, with the highest at $64 and the lowest at $40.
Since August, Benchmark and HSBC have both raised their ratings on the stock; Citi analyst Jason Bazinet raised the price target from $40 to $48 on August 10, maintaining a “Buy” rating. UBS and Piper Sandler also maintained their existing ratings.
Analysts unanimously expect Unity’s EPS for fiscal year 2026 to be -$0.69, but to turn positive in 2027 with EPS of $1.09. In the second quarter, the company’s EPS was -$0.05, better than the market expectation of -$0.11; the next earnings report will be released on November 11. Improvements in fundamentals, combined with business streamlining—including the closure of the ironSource ad network in April and the divestiture of the Supersonic mobile game publishing business in August—will further concentrate resources on the high-margin Create business and the AI-driven Vector advertising platform.
Q3 Financials Put to the Test
However, some market observers have pointed out that with a market cap of about $18.3 billion and approximately $540 million in free cash flow, Unity’s valuation isn’t cheap, with a price-to-sales ratio of about 9.
This premium is only justifiable if the Vector AI advertising platform scales up and margins expand significantly. In addition, Unity is somewhat dependent on its platform partners; if Meta changes its developer policies or hardware shipments fall short of expectations, the transmission mechanism could weaken.
The nearly 5% single-day gain is itself more of a sentiment-driven event and still awaits confirmation from the next earnings report (Q3 FY2026), to be announced on November 1.
