Musk stated: The Nvidia chips deployed for Colossus 2 may double by the end of the year

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI is rapidly expanding its AI computing power.

On September 25 local time, Musk stated on the social platform X that its AI computing cluster Colossus 2 has now deployed 110,000 Nvidia GB200 and 440,000 GB300 chips, totaling 550,000 chips, and by the end of the year, the number of chips could be more than double the current level.

Musk revealed that Colossus 2 will undergo intensive expansion: 220,000 GB300 chips are expected to be officially put into operation next week, with another 220,000 coming online in November. If progress goes smoothly, another 220,000 GB300 chips may go online by the end of December.

According to this expansion plan, Colossus 2 could add up to 660,000 new GB300 chips by the end of the year, bringing the total number of chips to around 1.21 million, an increase of about 120% over the current 550,000 chips.

This also means that Colossus 2 will experience a large-scale computing power expansion in the coming months, with almost all new chips coming from Nvidia GB300.

Musk also disclosed that Colossus 1 currently has 150,000 H100s, 50,000 H200s, and 30,000 GB200s. Previously, xAI stated its intention to have its data center in Memphis, USA equipped with 1 million GPUs by 2026.

This latest disclosure of Colossus 2's expansion timeline by Musk shows that xAI is still quickly scaling up its AI infrastructure. With the continuous launch of GB300 chips, xAI’s data center computing power will be further enhanced by the end of this year to support its AI model training and inference needs.
