CEO of Warburg Pincus: There are "real and highly attractive opportunities" in Japan, and we will seize the opportunities in spin-offs and privatizations

According to information from Zhihui Finance APP, Warburg Pincus LLC CEO Jeffrey Perlman stated that Japan is undergoing structural changes that make it more friendly and attractive to global private equity firms.

"Today, the Japanese market no longer sees private equity as a one-off adversary, but rather as a partner," Perlman said in an interview on Monday. "This is exactly where our value creation investment strategy can play a role, helping businesses achieve growth."

"In our view, this is a real and highly attractive opportunity," he added.

Perlman noted that although the large deal segment may appear crowded, Warburg Pincus is targeting the less competitive middle market. Earlier this year, the firm launched a ¥190 billion (USD 1.2 billion) takeover offer for the Japanese student apartment operator JSB Co., Ltd., which will be its first privatization deal in Japan.

Japan has thousands of listed companies—many of which are conglomerates with non-core business units suitable for streamlining or spin-offs—providing private equity investors with abundant M&A targets.

"Especially in the middle market, valuations remain attractive," he said. "We are also focused on the investment opportunities brought by asset carve-outs and disposals."

In addition, Perlman stated that the investment value in Indian local enterprises remains prominent, and Warburg Pincus will continue to increase its capital allocation there.
