Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Mixed Late Afternoon

03:44 PM EDT, 10/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks were mixed late Thursday afternoon with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) shedding 0.3% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) gaining 0.2%. In corporate news, Mattel (MAT) shares jumped 18%. The company recently drew takeover interest from Authentic Brands, the Wall Street Journal reported. Tesla's (TSLA) new vehicle registrations increased across several European markets in September, marking another month of improving regional sales, Reuters reported. Tesla shares rose 0.7%. General Motors (GM) reported a 6% decline in Q3 vehicle sales in the US to 670,974 units. GM shares were up 2.5%. McCormick's (MKC) fiscal Q3 results exceeded Wall Street's expectations even as the spices and seasonings producer faced volume weakness amid macroeconomic uncertainty. The shares fell 4.2%.
