Seagate Technology (STX.US) is engaged in fierce competition with Toshiba over TDK Corporation's hard disk drive (HDD) head business. According to sources familiar with the matter, Toshiba began negotiations with TDK in the spring, after which Seagate made a higher offer during the summer. They noted that the value of this acquisition deal could reach up to several billions of dollars. The winning bidder will control a key segment in the supply chain that plays a crucial role in the competitive HDD market, which is currently dominated by three companies. TDK is presently the only independent manufacturer of HDD magnetic recording heads, supplying not only to both bidders but also to Western Digital (WDC.US).
