Update: Equity Markets Rise Intraday Despite Higher Yields

US benchmark equity indexes were higher intraday as certain technology heavyweights advanced, while traders shrugged off rising bond yields. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1% at 27,448.1 after midday Monday, while the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to 7,771.3. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.2% to 51,261.4. Barring real estate, all sectors were in the green, led by materials. Shares of tech giants Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT) were among the top gainers on the Dow, up 1.5% and 1.4%, respectively. Alphabet's (GOOGL) class A shares and Amazon (AMZN) were also advancing. The 10-year US Treasury yield was up 6.8 basis points at 5.35%, while the two-year rate rose 2.3 basis points to 4.85%. "Treasury yields remain the principal near-term risk to stocks," Ivan Feinseth, chief market strategist at Tigress Financial Intelligence, said in a note. "Still, the fundamental backdrop remains supportive, with accelerating earnings growth, strong (artificial intelligence)-related capital investment, expanding semiconductor demand, increasing corporate buybacks and continued economic expansion." In economic news, growth in the US services sector decelerated sequentially in September, Institute for Supply Management data showed, while an S&P Global (SPGI) report pointed to the fastest expansion in more than five years, with both surveys indicating inflationary pressures. Last week, ISM and S&P surveys showed that the US manufacturing sector continued to expand last month amid robust demand and growth in employment, though inflationary pressures remained a key concern. West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 1.2% at $89.99 a barrel intraday Monday, while Brent dropped 1.6% to $100.64. Oil flows in Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline were operating normally, following media reports that it had suffered a new attack, Bloomberg News reported Monday, citing unnamed sources. C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) agreed to acquire RXO (RXO) in a cash-and-stock deal worth roughly $5.8 billion to create a more than $25 billion third-party logistics provider. C.H. Robinson shares were down 10%, while RXO soared 23%. PepsiCo (PEP) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) are among the major companies scheduled to report their latest quarterly financial results later this week. Spot gold edged down 0.3% to $4,129.09 per troy ounce, while silver climbed 1.5% to $61.33 per ounce.
