Reuters, October 12 - Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY.N) said on Monday that a lower dose of its experimental drug helped slow the rate of lung function decline in patients suffering from severe lung fibrosis disease.
This late-stage clinical trial, conducted on 1,255 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, tested two dosages of the oral formulation admilparant.
Previously, the company also reportedpositive trial results for its anticancer drug RYZ101 ( (link) ), which boosted its share price by more than 3% in pre-market trading.
If approved, admilparant would become the first LPA1 inhibitor drug for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Its mechanism works by inhibiting the LPA1 protein receptor to reduce lung fibrosis.
Existing drugs for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) include Boehringer Ingelheim's tyrosine kinase inhibitor Ofev, as well as Roche's ROPC.S anti-fibrotic drug Esbriet.
The New Jersey-based Bristol company said that a dose of 60 mg admilparant taken twice daily showed statistically significant efficacy in maintaining lung function compared with placebo.
However, the higher 120 mg dose did not meet the study's primary endpoint.
Lung function assessment used forced vital capacity (FVC) as an indicator, which measures the amount of air a person can forcibly exhale after a deep breath.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive lung disease that leads to irreversible scarring, causing the lung tissue to thicken and stiffen, thereby gradually impairing breathing and lung function.
The company stated that both dosages of the drug overall were well tolerated, with a low rate of discontinuation due to side effects and comparable to the placebo group.
Bristol is also testing the drug in another late-stage clinical trial for progressive pulmonary fibrosis, with results expected in early 2027.
