Tom Lee warns of ETH risk as Korean stock crash triggers crypto sell-off

Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat and a well-known Ethereum supporter, has taken an unexpected bearish stance on ETH, citing growing turbulence in the South Korean stock market as a potential catalyst for further downside in the cryptocurrency market.

South Korea’s Stock Market Shock

In a recent statement on X, Lee raised concerns about the sudden and steep decline in South Korean equities and its possible spillover effects on digital assets. South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index plunged over 6% on Tuesday, October 13, following widespread sell-offs in technology and semiconductor stocks, prompting emergency stabilization efforts by the Korea Exchange.

The intense stock market pressure is largely attributed to unease around the global artificial intelligence boom and questions regarding the competitive position of South Korea’s leading semiconductor manufacturers. Major companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have seen their share prices suffer as fears mount over Chinese competition in the sector.

Reports highlighted the advancement of Chinese chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in semiconductor technology, intensifying worries that Chinese firms could erode South Korean profit margins and suppress memory chip prices.

Broader Impact on Crypto Market

Lee specifically pointed to the vulnerability of cryptocurrencies like Ethereum due to the high participation rate of South Korean investors. He emphasized that the sharp drop in Korean equities may be “spilling over into crypto,” and voiced serious concern that margin liquidations at major Korean brokerages could amplify selling pressure across digital assets.

Lee underlined that South Korean investors represent a significant portion of crypto market activity, suggesting that the contagion risk from equity market turbulence poses a notable short-term threat to cryptocurrencies, including ETH.

As the KOSPI 200 futures plunged more than 5% early in the trading session, the Korea Exchange triggered an automatic sell-side sidecar at around 9:48 a.m. local time in an attempt to stabilize trading. Despite this intervention, the broader equities sell-off continued unabated throughout the day.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index in the United States also experienced a notable drop, declining 2.67% in the most recent session as concerns rippled through technology markets worldwide.

Technical Signals and Meme Token Momentum

As traditionally strong support levels for ETH are at risk due to increased market stress, market participants have been closely monitoring resistance points and trading patterns. This heightened focus on market signals also extends to the meme token ecosystem, where rapid shifts in sentiment and technical formations can create significant opportunities.

In the meme token market, an internet trend can transform into millions of dollars of investor interest within days. Fomo App data recently showed a striking example, where a “Niu Lai” trade converted an initial $99 into about $370,000. Timely tracking of both prices and investor behavior plays a critical role in this sector. Fomo App integrates token discovery, investor rankings, and trade notifications, offering a platform for following investor activity and sentiment in real time.

The recent wave of volatility in global equities is prompting observers to warn that market interconnectedness means even distant events, such as the sudden collapse in Korean stocks, can rapidly affect major cryptocurrencies like Ethereum.

The total amount of Iranian crude oil stranded on offshore tankers has decreased to about 83 million barrels, with around 43 million barrels trapped west of the Strait of Hormuz, making export difficult due to the US blockade. Excluding Iran, the crude oil flow in the Gulf region in September has recovered to over 81% of pre-war levels, mainly driven by the recovery of Saudi exports.
